"The Department of Conservation (DOC) has just declared a new war, and this time, the target is the feral cat. But before you buy the 'saving the birds' narrative, you need to see the Corporate Culling Machine for what it really is.
1. THE HORROR OF THE DEATH 🧪
DOC is expanding 1080 drops to target cats. This is not a 'quick' or 'humane' end. It is a slow, agonizing metabolic collapse. Animals suffer tremors, convulsions, and intense pain for hours, sometimes days. Is this 'conservation,' or is it state-sponsored cruelty?
2. THE 'MESOPREDATOR SURGE' BACKFIRE 🐀📈
Science shows that when you mass-cull cats, you trigger a 'Mesopredator Surge.' Without cats to keep them in check, rat and stoat populations explode. DOC knows this. By killing the cats, they actually create a bigger pest emergency, which conveniently justifies their next $150M taxpayer grant. It’s a self-perpetuating cycle of death.
3. THE SECTION 9 POWER GRAB ⚖️
How can they do this? Because of a 47-year-old law written by the old Forest Service. Section 9 of the Wild Animal Control Act 1977 legally declares all wild animals are 'Property of the Crown.' They 'stole' the wildlife from the people so they could treat nature like company inventory.
4. THE REVENUE TRAP 💰
DOC is a $700M-a-year Animal Processing Company.
They use the 'Cat Emergency' to justify the $100 International Visitor Levy.
They recruit low-socioeconomic groups as 'trappers' on their own ancestral lands, keeping them dependent on government culling grants.
They provide 'offsets' for industrial giants like Rocket Lab, who pay to kill 'pests' just to keep their launch licenses.
5. A COMPASSIONATE ALTERNATIVE 🕊️
It doesn't have to be this way. In the UK, cats have a legal 'Right to Roam' because they are recognized as sovereign beings. We could have:
Land Back: Return the 33% of NZ land to Iwi/Hapū to manage without the Crown 'clipping the ticket.'
TNR Programs: Use that 'culling cash' for Trap-Neuter-Return and managed colonies.
Unpoisoned Land: Stop the 1080 and let nature find its own balance.
The DOC isn't 'saving' anything—they are managing a Supply Chain of Poison to protect their budget. It’s time to abolish the DOC, repeal Section 9, and return to a land of compassion.
