The Rangataua Bat 'Massacre' (1994)

The Myth: One "super-predator" cat killed 102 bats in 7 days.

The Audit Finding:

  • The 1.9% Evidence: Only 2 out of 102 bats had confirmed bite marks.

  • The Forensic Void: 100 bodies had zero feline DNA and zero trauma. The cat’s stomach was empty of bat remains.

  • Never seen on camera, though a stoat was.

  • The Omission: An aerial 1080 drop occurred in the forest days prior. It was the reason for the research; no toxicology was performed on the victims. Verdict: A toxicological failure rebranded as a 'pest' success. [Ref: SG-BAT-102]

ABOUT THE SENTIENT GUARDIAN INITIATIVE (SGI)

The SGI is an independent, non-governmental advocacy group dedicated to providing a legal voice for New Zealand’s naturalised felines—our Sentient Guard.

We believe that Anonymity is a Death Sentence. Through our forensic Audit-2026-004 and our Project: Status microchipping program, we hope to move as many vulnerable felines from "anonymous pests" to Recognised Residents.

Backed by the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and aligned with the Animal Justice Party NZ, we choose Acceptance and Equilibrium over the state-funded $1.2 billion "war" on nature.

We provide educational resources to support humane, non-lethal management for cats in Aotearoa. We do not represent any government agency."

Status over Slaughter. Science over Folklore.

SGI VERIFIED PARTNER: FERAL NATION NZ Mission: Emergency Rescue & Large-Scale Population Management The Case: In late 2025, Feral Nation processed a single-day rescue of 59 kittens from a single location—a "mass-abandonment" event that occurred just weeks after the government's $1.2 billion "war" declaration. SGI DIRECT IMPACT: Feral Nation is the "Emergency Room" for the current crisis. Your direct donations fund the intensive medical care and microchipping required to save these animals from the state's "Stone-Cold Killer" [INDEX: 4] narrative. Registered New Zealand charity, (CC51395) Support the rescue, care, and veterinary treatment of abandoned cats in Christchurch rural, and industrial areas. Funds are used for TNR, vet care, food, medical care, colony support and monitoring equipment.

SGI VERIFIED PARTNER: COMMUNITY CAT COALITION (CCC) Mission: Large-Scale TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) & Colony Management The Case: The CCC is a professional network of rescuers who provide the Identity Shield for thousands of cats. They are the frontline defense against the November 2025 PF2050 mandate [4], proving that community management is more effective than state-funded eradication. SGI DIRECT IMPACT: Your donations to the CCC fund "Snip 'n' Chip" operations. This ensures that every cat in their network is legally protected under the Animal Welfare Act 1999 as a Recognised Resident. [ 💳 DONATE DIRECTLY TO THE CCC ] (Link: www.catcoalition.org.nz)
